Google has been consistently releasing flagship Pixel phones every year since 2016, and the Pixel 8 series is expected to debut in late 2023. The Pixel 7 series, launched in October 2022, was a major improvement over its predecessors, offering a powerful Tensor G3 chipset, a refined design, and a stellar camera performance. But how will Google top that with the Pixel 8 series? Here's what we know so far about the upcoming Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro.

Design and display

The Pixel 8 series will likely retain the distinctive design language of the Pixel 7 series, with a glass back and a horizontal camera module. However, there will be some subtle changes as well. According to leaked renders, the Pixel 8 Pro will have a flat display instead of a curved one, which might please some users who prefer flat edges. The Pixel 8 will also have a smaller display than the Pixel 7, measuring 6.17 inches instead of 6.3 inches. Both models will have more rounded corners than before.

The displays will also be brighter and more dynamic than the previous generation. The Pixel 8 Pro will reportedly have a Samsung OLED panel with a peak brightness of 1,500 nits and a variable refresh rate of up to 120Hz. The Pixel 8 will have either a Samsung or a BOE OLED panel with a peak brightness of 1,000 nits and a variable refresh rate of up to 90Hz. Both models will support HDR10+ and adaptive color temperature.

Performance and battery

The Pixel 8 series will likely be powered by the Tensor G3 chipset, which is Google's own custom-made processor that debuted on the Pixel 7 series. The Tensor G3 is based on a 5nm process and features four Cortex-A78 cores, four Cortex-A55 cores, and a Mali-G78 GPU. It also has a dedicated AI engine that enables faster and smarter image processing, speech recognition, natural language understanding, and security features.

The Tensor G3 chipset has shown impressive performance on benchmarks, scoring higher than the Snapdragon 888 and the Exynos 2100 on Geekbench and AnTuTu. However, it still lags behind the Snapdragon 888+ and the Exynos 2200, which are expected to power some of the Pixel 8's competitors.

The battery capacity of the Pixel 8 series is not yet known, but we can expect it to be similar to or slightly larger than the Pixel 7 series. The Pixel 7 has a 4,614mAh battery, while the Pixel 7 Pro has a 5,003mAh battery. Both models support wireless charging and reverse wireless charging. They also support fast charging up to 30W with a compatible charger.

Camera and software

The camera has always been one of the main selling points of Pixel phones, and the Pixel 8 series will likely continue that tradition. The Pixel 8 Pro will reportedly have a triple rear camera setup consisting of a main sensor (possibly Sony IMX789), an ultra-wide sensor (possibly Sony IMX563), and a telephoto sensor (possibly Samsung S5K3M5). The telephoto sensor will also have an additional periscope lens that enables up to 10x optical zoom and up to 100x digital zoom.

The Pixel 8 will have a similar rear camera setup as the Pixel 8 Pro, but without the periscope lens. It will only have up to 3x optical zoom and up to 30x digital zoom. Both models will also have an improved selfie camera (possibly Sony IMX616) that supports wide-angle selfies and Night Sight mode.

The camera software will also be enhanced with new features and modes powered by Google's AI engine. Some of these features include Magic Eraser (which removes unwanted objects from photos), Face Unblur (which fixes blurry faces in photos), Motion Mode (which captures moving subjects with blurred backgrounds), Long Exposure (which creates light trails in low-light conditions), and Cinematic Pan (which creates smooth video panning effects).

The Pixel 8 series will run on Android 13 out of the box, which is expected to launch in August or September 2023. Android 13 will bring new features and improvements such as a redesigned Material You UI, improved privacy and security controls, better compatibility with foldable devices, and more. The Pixel 8 series will also receive at least three years of software updates and security patches from Google, as well as exclusive Pixel features such as Call Screen, Live Caption, Now Playing, and more.
